[edit] Show Cases for Semantic MediaWiki

Hi, we are looking for a good show case to demonstrate Semantic MediaWiki features (typed links and typed attributes).

Requirements:

  • take a subset of current Wikipedia pages and annotate them collaboratively (convert links into typed links, convert numbers to attributes)
  • We can't deal well with time & space reasoning (currently)

Ideas:

  • Movies - IMDB is great already, time reasoning needed
  • Animals - many pages exist, many links
  • Soccer - too much space & time reasoning needed
  • Beer - not enough 'links'
  • Cars - not enough 'links'
  • Software Tools - too dry, people won't understand
  • Planes - not enough 'links'
  • Look at Wikipedia-Templates (including parameters) and try to formalize them.
  • Many places within the german wikipedia have geo-coordinates (e.g. [Eiffel Tower]). Add Property:Is_a "City" or "Place", add Attributes for Latitude and Longitude according to WGS86. Now define a SPARQ-Query for all cities/places, join with their geocoordinates, transform it to KML and show a map of landmarks for Google Earth (with links back to the wikipedia pages).

Besides Wikipedia, many [City Wikis] have lots of highly structured data, like:

  • shops, restaurants etc
  • public transportation (stations, connections)
  • streets and places

It would be interesting to formalize adresses, locations, connections etc.

[edit] Practical approach

Once we have agreed upon a subject, the whole subset of Wikipedia articles should be copied automatically to wiki.ontoworld.org, with the addition of {{Showcase-none}}, to indicate that it needs sematic markup.

[edit] Example

We have a full blown directory implementation working that fits your descriptive requirements pretty well. MyWikiBiz.com gives a couple of examples how a database can be constructed either manually or with a bot, so that useful semantic queries may be constructed. Please see this page to whet your appetite. -- MyWikiBiz 22:05, 17 December 2007 (CET)
