European Union

The European Union is the world's largest confederation of independent states. The most of its area is located in Europe.

There are 27 member countries: 12 in the Eurozone and 13 outside it. Of the 12 in the Eurozone all except Ireland and the overseas parts of France are also in the Schengen zone. Of the 13 countries of the European Union outside the Eurozone, Denmark and Sweden are in the Schengen zone.

From 2007 there are two more member countries: Romania and Bulgaria.

The common currency EURO is used in Austria, Belgium, Finland, Germany.
