[edit] Units discussion from 2005

Note: "ml" (for "mile") might be not possible when the Datatype must also handle units like Milliliter [ml] as well. When the Attrbute-Type is Type:Geographic length the use is ok - but don't assume that "ml" is possible anytime, so try to avoid it.

Not sure whether such notes are necessary. Which type should ever support both miles and milliliters? --Markus Krötzsch 23:43, 19 November 2005 (CET)
While speaking about length the meaning is clear - but that might not everytime the case. But I'm speaking about best-practice here, because users might tend to use "ml" and can get confused if it's not working. MovGP0 23:47, 19 November 2005 (CET)
Volume could get defined either as ml^3 or as ml. Even a human might get confused in that case - and so does software very likely. MovGP0
Good example, though the software I wrote will not be confused here, it is somewhat dangerous for humans. Anyway, such comments now can go to the article for the type, since they apply to all attrbutes of this type. I also wonder whether "ml" is particularly prefered to "mi" in some areas of the world; we do not want to forbid the most common usage either (no idea what is most common here ...). --Markus Krötzsch 23:55, 19 November 2005 (CET)
