[edit] Why Semantic Wikis?

What is the territory of Semantic Wikis?

  • Like normal wikis, but more sophisticated, doing everything better:
    • improved navigation
    • improved presentation
    • improved search
    • personalisation
  • Making the structure declarative helps in some wiki-tasks e.g. re-factoring can benefit from having declarative underlying models/structures.
  • Different areas
    • difference between Internet and Intranet
    • difference in the size of the community
  • Interoperability (Wikis are good Web citizens but bad "intranet citizens")
    • between different Wikis
    • with other applications, particularly in corporate environments
  • Educational effects, giving users a first introduction to knowledge based systems so that they can use more sophistaced systems later (WYSIWYG -> Wikitext)

[edit] Applications

  • as a knowledge base (Wikipedia)
  • for knowledge management
  • for project management
  • for personal information management
  • information retrieval in a general sense (replacement for Google)
