Talk:Chemical element
[edit] Category for isotopes
Any chemical element may have several different isotopes e.g. Carbon has Carbon-12, Carbon-13, and Carbon-14.
To what category should the page Carbon-12 belong? I could put it into category chemical element but it could also go into a new category for isotope. Then what is the relationship between category isotope and category chemical element? All isotopes belong to one particular chemical element, so there is a relationship between e.g. Carbon and Carbon-12. I could just make category isotope have category chemical element but that puts it into the same index as the other subcategories such as alkali metal, which are some chemical elements. --John 11:32, 21 January 2008 (CET)
What I have done is to create two new properties, has isotope and isotope of. I use these to link each chemical element to its own isotopes and the reverse. e.g. carbon and carbon-12. I also created the category Isotope at the top level.
I have used the properties explains about and has explanation to link chemical element to isotope. They are related but not included one in another in either direction.
I have also added inverse properties to the new properties I have declared.
